When to choose B.Pharm?

  • You wish to enter the workforce early

  • You aspire to work in the QC/QA set-up

  • Want to go for a biomedical/biotech research career path (Masters and preferably a PhD later is kind of mandatory)

  • You wish to go for Masters abroad and eyeing a research career

  • If you do not wish to spend more than 6-8 Lakhs on your undergraduate education while attending a private college in India [Low upfront cost and a quicker ROI]

Opportunities after B.Pharm

Opportunities in R&D, Specialized QA/QC, and Formulation Development are very low for fresh B.Pharm graduates. Usually, companies prefer M.Pharm. M.Sc. (Chemistry) or PhD graduates for those roles. However, if you are from a top-tier institute (such as BITS Pilani), you can get in.

But, don’t get disheartened. If you are passionate and wish to work towards human healthcare, it’s a great option after Class 12. The pharmaceutical industry in India is projected to reach significant value by 2030, which will eventually create many more job positions. According to a report by EY, India is well poised to become a global pharma giant by 2047 (potentially a market of $USD 450 Billion). Emerging areas like biopharmaceuticals, biosimilars, contract research and manufacturing (CRDMO), digital health solutions, and personalized medicine will also create new types of job roles.

When to choose Pharm.D?

  • You wish to work in the clinical/hospital set-up

  • You have a desire to work abroad (US, Canada, Australia, UK, Gulf) as a Pharmacist (please be advised that Licensing Exams for foreign countries also come with a significant cost).

  • You are comfortable with higher cost upfront and want to have a better ROI in the longer-term

Pharm D: Job Outlook

The Pharm.D course started in India in/around 2008. The first few years were not too nice in terms of job opportunities. There was a slow but steady increase for clinical pharmacists in India till 2015-2016. However, there have been improvements in the last few years.

Hospitals are really starting to see the huge benefit Pharm.D graduates bring on to the table. We are talking about folks who are experts in medication management, keeping a sharp eye out for adverse drug reactions (ADRs), providing crucial drug information, and offering excellent patient counseling. This shift was somehow due to the Covid-19 pandemic as well.

Companies like TCS, CTS, Accenture, IQVIA, Novartis, Pfizer, etc. hire Pharm.D and B.Pharm graduates for pharmacovigilance and related roles (offer 3 - 5 Lacs per annum). Those roles involve:

  • Monitoring and reporting adverse drug reactions (ADRs).

  • Ensuring drug safety compliance for global markets.

  • Data entry, signal detection, and medical coding using specialized software (e.g. Oracle Argus Safety, Aris Global, IQVIA Vigilance Platform, PvEdge, etc.)
