When combined with chemistry, medical science gives rise to ‘pharmacy.’ This field of study can be further divided into three branches: pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacognosy. This also involves pharmacy practice. Pharmacy is a lucrative career for science students due to the drastic developments in the medical field over the past decade. Students who have scored good marks in Chemistry or those interested in learning chemical experiments, and formulas, can choose this career option. There are about 2789 pharmacy colleges in India, spread over the famous cities of the Country. Students pursuing UG level B. Pharma studies can specialize in various streams of pharmacy and can get placed in multi-national medical firms and hospitals in India and abroad.
Chennai is one of the biggest cities with educational institutions, schools, and some of the oldest Universities of India. There are around 25 private and eight public pharmacy colleges in Chennai. Students residing in the Southern part of India would find this place suitable for their pharmacy studies. The private pharmacy colleges in India having a NIRF ranking are Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai, VELS University, Chennai, and Madras Medical College. Students need to take either the state-level entrance tests or the standard written tests conducted by the college to apply for merit seats. Most of the top private colleges in Chennai have a certain percentage of seats for the management quota, and those who couldn’t clear the entrance tests can directly apply to the colleges of their preference.
Students are advised to participate in the entrance exam conducted by Tamil Nadu for B. Pharm admissions, the TN B. Pharm Entrance Examination. Students should fill in the application form and submit the documents like a transfer certificate, mark list copies of the 10th and 12th standard, and a copy of the entrance scorecard, if applicable. The selection is purely based on the decisions made by the college management. Students have to take part in the standard entrance tests conducted by the college. Overall academic excellence, performance in the standard written tests, and communicational skills are some of the significant factors that lead you to a management quota seat in pharmacy.
Eligibility
Those who are planning to obtain a management quota seat should make sure that they meet the below eligibility criteria: -
Students with physics, chemistry, and biology as the core subjects in their higher secondary level are considered for pharmacy admissions
A minimum of 50% aggregate marks in the PUC/ pre-degree qualifying exams is mandatory
The ideal age of students should be 17-25 years while applying for their D-pharm/ B. Pharma / Pharm- D admissions
Admission procedure
The admission procedures for management quota seats start almost the same as the merit seat allotments.
Candidates must register on the college website online, fill in the form with relevant details, and submit the verified documents.
For those colleges that don’t accept an online application, the registration and the application fee payment should be made directly to the college via an offline mode or by visiting the college.
Most colleges accept the applications and conduct one or two counseling rounds before making the final selection.
The shortlisted candidates would get an intimation from the college and the details to report at the college to confirm their seats.

D-pharm is a diploma course in the pharmacy of 2 years duration. Those who would like to be a pharmacist in India/ run a pharmacy themselves can do this short-term diploma course and get a license.
There is a misconception among the general public that those who have done a B. Pharma or M. Pharma degree should work as a pharmacist in medical stores. However, this myth has been ruled out by several exciting career options in pharmacy; community pharmacist, researcher, various roles in Government/ NGO, jobs in military and defense sectors, are just a few to name.
Pharmacists should have in-depth knowledge of medicines, the various companies that produce these medicines, side- effects, toxic characteristics, reactions with other chemicals, control, dispense, and so on.
D-pharm is a diploma in pharmacy and is the primary education required to become a pharmacist. In contrast, Pharm-D is a six-year doctorate and is usually done after M. Pharma studies, or students can even directly apply for this course soon after their 12th standard.
Students need to pay an average of Rs. 6.00 lakhs – Rs. 10.00 lakhs to get a Pharm- D admission in most private pharmacy colleges in India.
