In Conversation with Jesty Marium Mathew, Pharm.D Graduate from East Point College of Pharmacy Bengaluru

This interview with Jesty Marium Mathew, a PharmD graduate at East Point College of Pharmacy, is presented to you by Careers360. In this interview, Jesty talks about industry interactions, internships, placements and facilities offered by EPCP, Bangalore.

Careers360: Could you briefly introduce yourself and tell us about the programme you pursued at East Point Group of Institutions?

Jesty Marium: Hi, I’m Jesty Marium Mathew from Alappuzha, Kerala. I completed my Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) from East Point College of Pharmacy, Bengaluru. The programme provided me with a strong academic foundation in clinical pharmacy, pharmacology, therapeutics, and patient care. What made it truly valuable was its emphasis on practical learning through hospital postings, case discussions, research, and patient counselling. The curriculum helped me develop clinical reasoning, communication, and documentation skills while encouraging ethical and evidence-based practice. My journey at East Point not only prepared me for professional responsibilities but also instilled the confidence and commitment needed for a lifelong career in healthcare.

Careers360: When exploring higher education options, what drew you toward East Point Group of Institutions?

Jesty Marium: While exploring pharmacy colleges, I wanted an institution that combined academic excellence with extensive clinical exposure. Careers360: Looking back, what were your first impressions of the campus, faculty, and academic environment?

Jesty Marium: My first impression of East Point was its welcoming and vibrant campus environment. The institution offered an atmosphere that encouraged learning, collaboration, and personal growth. The faculty members were approachable, knowledgeable, and always willing to guide students beyond the classroom. They encouraged us to ask questions, think critically, and apply theoretical concepts in clinical practice. The academic environment was well-organized, supportive, and focused on holistic development. It inspired us to stay curious, actively participate in learning activities, and continuously improve ourselves, making the transition into professional healthcare education both comfortable and motivating.

Careers360: How well did the curriculum prepare you for industry demands or higher studies?

Jesty Marium: The Pharm.D curriculum at East Point effectively bridged the gap between classroom learning and professional practice. Along with a strong theoretical foundation, we gained practical experience through clinical postings, patient counselling, case presentations, and research activities. These experiences helped me develop analytical thinking, communication, and clinical decision-making skills. Exposure to hospital-based learning enhanced my understanding of patient care and evidence-based practice. By the time I completed the programme, I felt well-prepared to meet industry expectations and confidently pursue opportunities in clinical pharmacy, research, pharmacovigilance, and other healthcare sectors.

Careers360: Did you participate in any research projects, internships, workshops, or certification programmes during your time at the institution?

Jesty Marium: Yes, I actively participated in clinical internships, research projects, workshops, and professional development programmes throughout my Pharm.D journey. My internship at East Point Hospital provided valuable exposure to medication review, patient counselling, therapeutic drug monitoring, and clinical documentation. I also worked on a research project comparing antihypertensive therapies, which strengthened my analytical and research skills. In addition, I completed Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification and attended various seminars and workshops that expanded my understanding of clinical research, regulatory affairs, and pharmacovigilance. These experiences enhanced both my technical knowledge and professional confidence.

Careers360: Were you involved in any clubs, cultural activities, sports, or student-led initiatives? How did those experiences help you grow?

Jesty Marium: Yes, I actively participated in cultural events and student-led activities throughout my time at East Point. One of the highlights was Samskruthi, the institution's flagship national-level intercollegiate cultural festival, which brings together students from across the country and has featured celebrated performers such as Sonu Nigam and internationally acclaimed DJs associated with the Sunburn. Participating in such large-scale events gave me the opportunity to interact with students from diverse backgrounds, build lasting friendships, and strengthen my confidence, teamwork, leadership, and communication skills. These experiences taught me to balance academics with extracurricular activities and prepared me to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary healthcare environments.

Careers360: How helpful was the institution's placement support in securing job opportunities?

Jesty Marium: The placement support at East Point played an important role in preparing students for their professional careers. The placement team organised career guidance sessions, resume-building workshops, aptitude training, and mock interviews that helped us understand industry expectations. The faculty also provided valuable mentoring and encouraged us to develop both technical and soft skills. This comprehensive support boosted my confidence and helped me approach interviews with better preparation. The institution's guidance ensured that students were well-equipped to pursue opportunities in hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, clinical research organisations, and other healthcare sectors.

Careers360: Were there any challenges you faced while transitioning from college to the professional world, and how did you overcome them?

Jesty Marium: The biggest challenge was adapting to the fast-paced and highly responsible clinical environment. Unlike classroom learning, professional practice requires quick decision-making, effective communication, and meticulous attention to patient safety. I overcame these challenges by staying open to learning, seeking guidance from mentors, asking questions whenever needed, and continuously improving my clinical knowledge. The practical training and hospital exposure I received at East Point gave me the confidence to adapt quickly. Over time, I became more comfortable handling responsibilities and developed the professionalism required in healthcare practice.

Careers360: If you could go back to your college days, is there anything you would do differently?

Jesty Marium: If I had the opportunity to go back, I would participate in even more research projects, scientific conferences, and professional networking opportunities. While I made the most of my academic and clinical training, I now realise that interacting with researchers and industry professionals earlier would have broadened my perspective and opened additional career opportunities. I would also pursue more certifications related to clinical research and regulatory affairs. These experiences, combined with academic excellence, can significantly strengthen a student's professional profile and prepare them for diverse career paths in healthcare.

Careers360: What advice would you give current students to make the most of their time at East Point?

Jesty Marium: My advice is to make full use of every learning opportunity available. Focus on academics, but don't limit yourself to the classroom. Participate actively in clinical postings, research projects, workshops, seminars, and extracurricular activities. Build strong relationships with your faculty members and peers, as they can become valuable mentors and lifelong professional connections. Stay curious, ask questions, continuously update your knowledge, and develop both technical and communication skills. The experiences you gain during your time at East Point will not only shape your professional career but also help you grow into a confident and compassionate healthcare professional.
